Publisher’s Introduction

In 1994, an important art collector from Geneva, Bernard Vischer, with the support of many artists, writers and friends, created the “Circle of Friends of Editart.” Through exhibitions, editions and lectures, the Circle brings together the artistic perceptions of painters and poets. Each year, the Members of the Circle receive an edition containing an original print created by an artist of the gallery along with one or several poems by a contemporary writer inspired by the print.

In 2012, we are proud to offer to the Members of the Circle the work of the Canadian painter and print maker Roberta Sutherland and the Swiss poet Sylviane Dupuis. Those who know Sutherland’s work will be more familiar with her paintings of calligraphic marks on textured canvas. Yet drawing has always been a fundamental aspect of the artist’s practice, the print chosen for this edition relates to the many years the artist has devoted to exploring and documenting the horizon.

We are pleased to publish this catalogue of Roberta Sutherland’s work on paper. These pieces create a strong foundation upon which this year’s Circle print Chrysalide sits. The drawings from the Ibridos series at the end of the catalogue show the intriguing direction Roberta’s work has taken. We look forward to our ongoing association with this artist which started many years ago.
